Castelo de São Jorge

Castelo de São Jorge - a castle located in Alfama. The beginnings of the castle date back to the 5th century and the times of Visigoths. In the early twelfth century, the Moors enlarged the fortifications and surrounded the castle with walls. Then the Portuguese Kings expanded it to today's size. Until the 16th century, the castle remained a royal residence. During the earthquake in 1755, the castle was seriously damaged. It contributed to its degradation and decline. Currently, the completely rebuilt castle has been made available for sightseeing. The castle has a cafe, pine gardens and, in addition, beautiful views of Lisbon.
